Have you ever removed your spark plug and noticed one side of the plug is dark and the other side is light? This has to do with where the spark is placed in the combustion chamber. Pointing the open end of the electrode directly at the intake gives the spark and flame front exactly 180 degrees of travel on each side until reaching the exhaust. The correct electrode placement gives you an even consistent burn. Smokey Yunick, the legendary NASCAR engine builder says indexing the plugs on a NASCAR engine produces approximately 8 hp on the Dyno. We won't see any numbers that large on small engines; however, we know the science is correct.

Installation Instructions:

Find the open end of the electrode on your spark plug. Put a small
mark on the porcelain part of the plug that corresponds with the open
end of the electrode. Insert plug into head and tighten to 10 ft lbs. of torque.
Notice which direction your mark faces once the plug is installed.
If it is not facing the intake side, remove the plug, select one of the spark
plug indexing washers and re-install the plug, tightening to10 ft lbs. DO NOT
remove the expansion washer from the plug. Repeat installation procedure
using different indexing washers until the electrode is facing directly at the
intake indicated by your mark on the porcelain.
